Classic Car Air Conditioning Repair, Restoration and Modernisation
Do you own the classic car of your dreams—but find yourself sweating in it all summer?
Driving a classic car should be an experience: the sound of the engine, the smells, the shapes and the feeling that a modern car cannot recreate. In summer, however, this can easily be lost when the air conditioning barely cools, the cabin overheats or the system also places a burden on engine cooling.
Widi Automotive specialises in the repair, restoration and modernisation of air conditioning systems in classic and youngtimer cars. We do more than recharge the system: we inspect the entire air conditioning system, find the true cause of the fault and, where necessary, investigate associated cooling or electrical problems.
Our goal is to keep your classic car comfortable, reliable and safe to use even on the hottest summer days.
Classic Car Air Conditioning Systems
- Aged components
- Leaking seals
- Worn compressor
- Previous improper repairs
Perhaps one of the most important issues is that these systems were not designed for modern urban traffic or today’s weather conditions. At the same time, no matter how much we appreciate the authentic classic-car experience, we have become accustomed to the comfort provided by modern vehicles.
This is why problems with a classic car’s air conditioning system must be approached as a complete system.
The cause of every problem must be identified and eliminated. If the refrigerant has escaped, there is a reason. If the system only cools while the car is moving, there is a reason. If the engine overheats when the air conditioning is switched on, there is a reason for that as well.
We do not simply treat the symptoms. We identify the source of the problem, repair it, and where necessary, use modern solutions to improve the system’s efficiency.
Our classic car air conditioning service
What does it include? How does the process work?
-
Condition assessment and diagnostics
We examine the entire air conditioning system comprehensively. Pressure testing checks for leaks, and we review the system’s operation and the quality of previous repairs. As the air conditioning is closely linked to engine cooling and the electrical system, we include these in the diagnostics too. We look for the true cause of the problem rather than treating only the symptom.
-
Repair and modernisation plan
We determine which components can be repaired, which need replacement and whether modernising the system is justified. Based on this, we compile the parts list and expected cost estimate.
-
Repair, restoration and modernisation
We carry out the required repairs, cleaning and component replacements. Where necessary, we install modern R134a-compatible components, a more advanced compressor, a fan or other improvements while preserving the car’s original appearance and character wherever possible.
-
Pressure testing, charging and adjustment
After assembly, we check the system for leaks again, charge it with the appropriate refrigerant, then adjust it and check it in operation.
-
Testing
We check more than whether the air conditioning blows cold air. We test its operation at idle, in urban use and under load, while monitoring engine temperature and electrical system load. The goal is not simply working air conditioning but a stable, reliable system.
We Look Beyond the Air Conditioning System
We do not treat the air conditioning system in isolation. Even in a classic car, air conditioning, engine cooling and the electrical system are closely interconnected, so where necessary we inspect and coordinate them together. We check not only whether the system blows cold air, but also whether it operates reliably at idle, in urban traffic and under greater load.
Depending on the condition of the car and the system, the work may include partial or complete disassembly, thorough internal and external cleaning, replacement of necessary components and, if required, the installation of modernisation solutions. These may include an additional fan, more advanced controls or another solution that improves the system’s operation.
Assembly is followed by pressure testing, leak checks, charging with the appropriate refrigerant, adjustment and testing in real operating conditions. Internal cleaning is particularly important if the old compressor oil or previous refrigerant is incompatible with the new system. We also clean the cabin heat exchanger and associated air ducts to remove unpleasant smells, mould and other contamination, always including ozone-generator disinfection.
We also design air conditioning solutions for classic and youngtimer cars that were not equipped with air conditioning from the factory. The aim is to create a system that improves usability while preserving the car’s original appearance and character wherever possible.
Modern Comfort While Preserving the Car’s Original Character
When modernising a classic car, our goal is not to turn it into a modern vehicle.
We aim to ensure that:
- the original controls are retained,
- no visually intrusive switches are added to the dashboard,
- new components match the appearance of the vehicle,
- and modifications remain hidden wherever possible.
Modernisation should improve usability—not alter the character of the car.
Real-World Results
Following the complete restoration and modernisation of the air conditioning system in a 1969 Mercedes-Benz 280 SL, we tested the vehicle in direct sunlight, at idle, with the air conditioning switched on.
The measured results were:
The cabin cooled from 26 °C to 18 °C in 8 minutes.
At maximum performance, the system delivered air as cold as 4 °C.
These results were not achieved by simply refilling the air conditioning system. They required the coordinated development and optimisation of the air conditioning, engine cooling, airflow, and electrical systems.

Frequently Asked Questions
Every project is different, but most air conditioning restoration and modernisation projects take approximately 1–2 months from the time the vehicle arrives at our workshop.
Throughout the project, we keep our clients regularly informed about the progress, discuss any newly discovered issues, and obtain approval before carrying out any additional work. Our goal is to make the entire process transparent and predictable from start to finish.
Every project is unique, so we prepare a detailed cost estimate after assessing the condition of the car and its air conditioning system. As a general guideline, for the complete restoration or modernisation of an existing air conditioning system:
- Labour: typically 1 050 000-1 550 000 Ft including VAT.
- Parts: generally 150 000-500 000 Ft, depending on the condition of the system and the parts required.
- For rare or special models, parts costs can reach 800 000-1 000 000 Ft or even more.
If you send us the make, model, year, engine and a brief description of the air conditioning system’s current condition, we can provide an initial cost range by email.
We prepare the final cost estimate after inspecting the car in our workshop, and begin any repair only after discussing it with you and receiving your approval.
Why us?
Specialists in classic cars
We do not work on classics as a general car repair shop. Our workshop specialises in the restoration, repair and modernisation of classic and youngtimer cars, so we understand their particular technical problems and compromises.
Restoration experience and engineering approach
Restorers and automotive engineers work together on our projects. We do more than replace components: we measure, diagnose and think in terms of complete systems to resolve the true cause of a problem.
Specialists in classic car air conditioning
We do not treat air conditioning as an isolated system. We consider engine cooling, the electrical system, fans and airflow so that the system performs properly in summer traffic as well as in the workshop.
Modern comfort, original character
Where possible, we preserve the car’s original appearance and controls while installing more advanced, reliable technical solutions.
Transparent, documented work
We agree the necessary work and expected costs in advance and make the process traceable with photos, videos and detailed documentation.
Warranty on our work
We provide a 6-month warranty on all work we carry out. Larger projects and complete restorations receive a longer warranty under individual terms.
Our workshop is located in Kecel, Hungary , and we welcome classic cars from across Hungary and abroad.
